USB4 will double the speed with Thunderbolt

Asus-ZenBook-with USB4

The next generation USB4 specification, unveiled today, will provide data transfer speeds up to 40 Gbps when using compatible USB-C cables connecting a pair of compatible devices.

Currently, USB3 has a maximum speed of 20 Gbps, so the new specification, which should be fully operational by the summer, will double the speeds currently offered. If you think the technology is very similar to Thunderbolt, you're right. USB4 now contains Thunderbolt 3 thanks to Intel's decision to open the standard.

Thunderbolt integration also means support for a pair of HDR 4K displays (@ 60Hz refresh rate) or one 5K display. Eight lanes of DisplayPort data will also be supported by USB4.

USB-IF, which manages the specifications, says the new protocol will build on existing USB 3.2 and USB 2.0 standards. It says that 50 tech companies are currently in final testing of the USB4 technology, the specification of which will be published around the middle of the year.

Companies considering this technology include Apple, Microsoft, Intel, HP, Texas Instruments and other USB Promoters Forum members. We can safely assume that all PCs and Macs made by major manufacturers will adopt the new specification at the earliest opportunity.

“The release of the Thunderbolt protocol specification is a milestone in making the simplest and most versatile port available to everyone today,” said Jason Ziller, general manager, Client Connections, Intel. “By working with the USB Promoter Group, we are opening the door to innovation across a wide range of devices and increasing interoperability, thereby improving the customer experience.”
